We just love sport card design. let’s take a look at some classic and modern sport card design.
We understand most people collect due to it’s value, nostalgia or perhaps both? Some people collect with a stronger emphasis on card design and I can totally relate. In this article, we are going to explore some the best designed sports cards ever made.
1984 Topps Baseball
Such a timeless design, this and the Don Mattingly are one of the most memorable cards growing up. Such a simple design yet complex at the same time. I really like the font treatment and the way the top right corner flows with the Topps logo.
1960 Topps Baseball
This was the first card where I appreciated the design more than the card itself. If I had to pick just one card as my favorite design, I would have to give the nod to the Topps’ 1960. I definitely like the big bold fonts and the complimentary color treatment on the right-hand side. Usually, the back of the card had some cartoon elements that modern cards lack.
1990 Score Baseball
Bo Jackson, considered one of the greatest all-around athletes of all time. Score acquired a license to use the iconic Nike “Bo Knows” advert and used the image for their Bo Jackson card in their Score baseball set. The back of the card has bold “BO” letters which go great with this card. Black and White was a great choice for this card.
2022 Topps Printing Plate F1
These printing plate cards are gorgeous, these come in different inks like yellow, black, cyan, magenta and other colors. The reverse plates is a nice look too. Everytime we have a printing plate card, they sell out quickly.
2009 Panini National Treasures Basketball
Aside from this being one hell of a card, Panini National Treasures has always used white space beautifully. White makes the card classy and Panini usually adds amazing looking patches to their products.
1909-1911 T206
These cards may be viewed as simple or minimal but that’s what makes these T-206 cards such classics! They definitely still hold up over a century later. Back then you could find one card per cigarette pack. A T 206 Honus Wagner sold for a record $7.3 million dollars.
1989 Upper Deck Baseball
Technically I don’t think this a groundbreaking design but the way Upper Deck stepped up the quality of the cards really changed the game. For the first time, we saw high-resolution images and a full-color back. Too bad this card was overly produced.
1989 Skybox E-X Dunk ‘N Go
I had a friend of mine say, “I don’t even collect Michael Jordan cards, but I really want this”. The acetate really sets this card off and looks amazing in a slab. Do you want this Michael Jordan auto? Be ready to spend around 40k for it.
Die-Cut Cards
Die-Cut cards and inserts really get my attention more than standard 3×4 cards. Look for numbered die-cut inserts instead of standard base and you’ll be surprised what you find. What can I say, if we’re talking about card design, die-cuts can be very creative.
Upper Deck UD Choice Mini Bobbing Heads
Not your average Michael Jordan basketball card but has tons of personality. This 1998-99 Upper Deck UD Choice Mini Bobbing Heads Michael Jordan #30 card is amazing. The best-designed cards don’t have to be the most expensive, Definitely one of Waxkid will always collect.
